LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Interpret the WHS legislative framework and its relationship to the HSR role
  2. Identify key parties, legislative obligations, and health and safety duties
  3. Establish and participate in workplace consultation processes
  4. Participate effectively in WHS issue resolution procedures
  5. Represent work group members in risk management processes
  6. Issue Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) when appropriate
  7. Direct unsafe work to cease when there is a serious risk
  8. Conduct workplace inspections and investigate incidents

CERTIFICATE

Upon successful completion of the course HSRs will receive SafeWork NSW Statement of Training.

Teams/Zoom Participants

As a requirement to to complete the course remotely via Teams/Zoom. You must have a reliable internet connection, PC/Laptop or Mobile device with working camera, speaker and mic.

Language Requirements

Participants undertaking the Health and Safety Representative (HSR) course (Commonwealth) must have sufficient English language, literacy and numeracy skills to actively participate in training. This includes the ability to read and understand basic workplace health and safety information, communicate verbally in English during discussions, follow simple instructions, and recognise basic numbers relevant to WHS activities.
Participants who require assistance with language, literacy or numeracy are encouraged to contact our staff prior to enrolment to discuss available support options and reasonable adjustments.

This course is designed for newly elected Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and Deputy HSRs in NSW workplaces. Employers must allow elected HSRs to attend approved training through Advance OHS.

While training is not required to be elected as an HSR, completing the approved Initial 5-Day course is required to fully exercise HSR powers, including issuing Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs).

Advance OHS delivers the HSR Initial 5-Day course through:

  1. Face-to-face classroom training
  2. Connected or blended delivery (where approved)

All delivery methods meet SafeWork NSW approval requirements.

The course covers:

  1. NSW WHS legislation and duties

  2. HSR roles, powers, and functions

  3. Hazard identification and risk control

  4. Consultation and issue resolution

  5. Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs)

  6. Working effectively with PCBUs and inspectors

Under NSW WHS legislation, employers must pay all reasonable costs, including:

  1. Course fees charged by Advance OHS

  2. Paid time to attend training

  3. Reasonable travel and accommodation costs (if applicable)

Yes. Participants who complete the HSR Initial 5-Day course with Advance OHS receive a SafeWork NSW approved Certificate of Completion, confirming they are trained to act as an HSR in NSW.
