Held each October, National Safe Work Month is a chance for workplaces across Australia to focus on safe and healthy work. The 2026 theme is “Safe work is for life”, a reminder that WHS is about more than preventing harm in the moment; it’s about protecting workers’ lives, health and future.

This Year’s Theme

Safe Work Australia has set the 2026 theme as “Safe work is for life”, reflecting the fundamental purpose of work health and safety: to prevent work-related death, injury and illness, while recognising the long-term impact workplace harm can have on workers, families, businesses and communities.

The campaign points to a sobering reality behind the theme. Hundreds of serious workers’ compensation claims are made every day across Australia, each one representing a life altered by an incident that could have been prevented.

Four Weekly Focus Areas

Throughout October, the campaign explores four weekly focus areas:

  • Week 1 (1–11 October): For life – why WHS matters.
  • Week 2 (12–18 October): For health – what WHS protects.
  • Week 3 (19–25 October): For the future – the long-term impact.
  • Week 4 (26–31 October): For all – action across all workplaces.

How HSRs and Workplaces Can Take Part

You don’t need a big program to make the month count. Pick one thing you can actually finish. For example:

  • Sit down with your HSRs and review how consultation happens day to day.
  • Revisit your psychosocial risk controls, job demands, support and workplace relationships are common pressure points.
  • Run a short toolbox talk on a hazard that’s specific to your work.
  • Check that your risk register reflects how the work is actually done now.

Safe Work Australia publishes a free campaign kit each year, posters, digital assets and activity sheets, to help workplaces start the conversation.

National Safe Work Month is a natural prompt to make sure your Health and Safety Representatives are current and confident in their role. Refresher training keeps HSRs across their duties, powers and the latest legislative changes.
