Research consistently shows that early intervention, effective communication and suitable duties can significantly improve recovery outcomes while reducing the financial and operational impact of workplace injuries.

This Return to Work Awareness Course provides managers, supervisors and team leaders with a practical understanding of the return to work process and the employer’s role in supporting injured workers following a workplace injury or illness. Participants will learn how to respond when an injury occurs, communicate effectively with injured workers, identify suitable duties, and support a safe and sustainable recovery at work.

The course covers workers compensation processes, employer obligations, injury reporting and notification requirements, suitable duties programs, Certificates of Capacity, working with treating practitioners, return to work planning and the benefits of early and meaningful workplace support.

Practical case studies and workplace examples are used throughout the course to help participants apply return to work principles in real workplace situations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our Return to Work Awareness course.

Return to Work Awareness training provides managers, supervisors and employers with an understanding of the return to work process following a workplace injury or illness. The course focuses on supporting injured workers, meeting employer obligations and facilitating successful recovery at work outcomes.

This course is suitable for managers, supervisors, team leaders, HR professionals, business owners and anyone responsible for supporting injured workers or participating in workplace injury management and return to work processes.

The course covers workers compensation processes, employer responsibilities, injury reporting and notification requirements, suitable duties programs, Certificates of Capacity, communication with injured workers, working with treating practitioners and the benefits of early return to work.

Early and appropriate return to work can improve recovery outcomes, maintain worker engagement, reduce the risk of long-term absence and minimise the personal and financial impact of workplace injuries on both workers and employers. The course explores evidence-based approaches to supporting recovery at work.

Suitable duties are meaningful work tasks that an injured worker can safely perform while recovering from an injury. Suitable duties should consider the worker’s medical restrictions, current capacity and workplace requirements. Participants learn practical approaches to identifying and implementing suitable duties programs.

A Certificate of Capacity is a medical document completed by the treating practitioner that outlines an injured worker’s capacity for work, treatment requirements and any work restrictions. Employers use this information to assist with return to work planning and identifying suitable duties.

Employers play a critical role in supporting injured workers through timely communication, injury reporting, identifying suitable duties, maintaining contact during recovery, consulting with treating practitioners and facilitating a safe and sustainable return to work.

The course is delivered over approximately 3 hours and includes practical examples, case studies and discussion-based learning activities.
