ABOUT THIS COURSE
Health and Safety Committees (HSCs) are an important part of effective workplace health and safety consultation. They provide a formal mechanism for workers and management representatives to work together to identify hazards, discuss safety concerns, review workplace incidents, and contribute to continuous improvement in workplace health and safety performance.
For many organisations, Health and Safety Committee members are expected to participate in safety meetings, review risk controls, consult with workers, and contribute to workplace safety initiatives. To do this effectively, committee members need a clear understanding of their roles, responsibilities, consultation requirements, and the principles of hazard identification and risk management.
This Health and Safety Committee Training course provides practical knowledge and skills for new and existing committee members, supervisors, managers, Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs), and worker representatives involved in workplace health and safety consultation. Participants will gain an understanding of committee functions, effective consultation processes, hazard reporting, incident management, risk assessment, meeting procedures, and strategies for improving workplace safety outcomes.
Training is tailored to your organisation’s industry, workplace hazards, safety management systems and internal procedures to ensure practical and relevant learning outcomes.
The course can be delivered onsite at your workplace or via connected learning across Sydney and NSW. Participants who successfully complete the training receive a Statement of Training issued by Advance OHS.
Note: This is a non-accredited workplace training course designed to develop practical Health and Safety Committee knowledge and consultation skills.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our Health & Safety Committee (HSC) Training course.
What is a Health and Safety Committee (HSC)?
A Health and Safety Committee (HSC) is a formal workplace consultation forum that brings together worker and management representatives to discuss health and safety matters. The committee assists with identifying hazards, reviewing incidents, consulting on risk controls, and promoting continuous improvement in workplace health and safety performance.
What are the responsibilities of a Health and Safety Committee?
A Health and Safety Committee helps facilitate consultation and cooperation between workers and management on workplace health and safety matters. Typical responsibilities include reviewing hazards and incidents, monitoring corrective actions, discussing workplace safety concerns, recommending improvements, and contributing to the development and review of WHS policies and procedures.
Is a Health and Safety Committee required by law?
A Health and Safety Committee must be established if requested by a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) or by five or more workers. Once established, the committee provides a structured process for consultation and cooperation on workplace health and safety matters.
Who should attend Health and Safety Committee training?
This course is suitable for Health and Safety Committee members, Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs), supervisors, managers, worker representatives, WHS officers and anyone involved in workplace health and safety consultation. It is suitable for both new and experienced committee members.
What does Health and Safety Committee training cover?
The course covers committee roles and responsibilities, workplace consultation requirements, committee meeting procedures, hazard identification, risk assessment, incident reporting, risk controls, worker participation, communication techniques and strategies for improving workplace safety outcomes.
What is the difference between a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) and a Health and Safety Committee (HSC)?
A Health and Safety Representative (HSR) is an elected worker who represents a designated work group and has specific powers and functions under workplace health and safety legislation. A Health and Safety Committee (HSC) is a consultative group made up of worker and management representatives that works together to discuss and improve workplace safety. An HSR may also be a member of the committee.
How often should Health and Safety Committee meetings be held?
